Antique c. 1891 OLDEST MARK for Schmidt & Co. Oval Mark with Angel registered No. 164 on August 20th, 1891 with the Chamber of Trade and Commerce in Eger by Schmidt & Co and is the oldest Mark used. Victoria over and Angel with Carlsbad under that and then Austria.
Origin The factorys name is Porcelain Factory Victoria Schmidt & Company, founded in 1883. The piece is marked Carlsbad, Austria. Carlsbad was a town located in Bohemia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time the piece was made. After the end of World War I, Carlsbad became Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia (later Czech Republic).
Carlsbad was the well-known center for Bohemian porcelain. Sometimes factories outside the city proper would use the place-name in its mark just for the association in the marketplace. The this Vanity Tray was actually made in Altrohlau, Bohemia (modern-day Stara Role, Czech Republic).
